We are all creatures of habit. Thank goodness
for that because if we were not, we would never get anywhere
on time and never accomplish anything worthwhile. So, having
habits is useful and can allow us to accomplish many things
as long as we know that we are developing and implementing habits
all the time, some of which must be changed or eliminated, in
order for us to grow and develop in a fast changing world. |

An addiction is a harmful behavior that has
been repeated so often that it has become stronger than a habit
and is now a controller of our lives. There are hundreds of
addictions and over 60 identified 12 step self help programs
to assist people to manage and to overcome their addictions.
An addiction is a behavior or set of behaviors that have significantly
adverse life consequences that we continue to do even though
we know that we run the risk of great shame and loss should
the addiction be discovered. Examples of addiction are alcoholism,
drug dependency, food addictions and morbid obesity and pathological
gambling to name a few. These behaviors cause us significant
harm and yet we continue to do them in spite of the losses we
are experiencing and the negative consequences that await us.
