Men get angry and rage for a variety of reasons. However, whatever the reason might be, it is not acceptable behavior and it has negative consequences for the rager and for the person whom the anger and rage are directed at. Anger and rage can come from a variety of sources including inherited genetic factors, chemical imbalances in the brain, psychiatric conditions, learned behaviors, interpersonal conflicts, modeled actions by caretakers and significant others and by giving silent approval for anger and rage to occur and alcohol and drug abuse problems, stress, a lack of sleep, feeling overwhelmed by problems, to name a few.

Whatever the reason(s) or sources(s), it is clear that the causation is not easily identified or understood. What is really important is the resolution of the anger and rage. Intervening on anger and rage issues requires a multifaceted approach utilizing multiple measures to interrupt the anger patterns and to obtain abstinence from anger and rage. Abstinence is a concept well known in the treatment of alcohol and drug issues and it lends itself to the resolution of anger and rage problems as well. Teaching the rager how to stop raging must include teaching the rager how to abstain from anger and rage in order to manage their rage problems.
